Kaitlin spoke to her uncle as she waited for an Uber to take her to Union Station.

“You were right,” she said. “He’s starting to lose his memories.”

“What a waste of talent,” Charles said. The disdain in his voice was unmistakable. “He made all the wrong choices, choosing sex and drugs over power. Thank god your father isn’t around to see what he’s done to himself.”

My father would’ve never allowed this to happen. She opened her mouth to deliver the retort, only to close it. “Two names hold the key,” she said, instead. “Rakshan and Aditya. Aditya was his old boss, yet he has no memory of this man now.”

“I’ll pass the names along to Director Cunningham at the FBI. Just like any truth can be buried with enough effort, the opposite is also true.”

A swell of nausea hit her like a wave, soaking her in her uncle’s schemes and machinations. Why can’t he ever just ask for support like a normal person? Why does this family only work when we’re manipulating people?

“This is good, Kaitlin,” he said. “A personal connection to WP abuse will strengthen my case for war when I talk to the president. You did well.”

She nodded as she disconnected the call. Then why do I feel so sick?
